    For most young Krakovians, it’s the first serious word: “Prokocim.” Here they buy first apartments, take first loans, start adult life. It’s Krakow’s largest residential district, home to a hundred thousand people who discovered happiness doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

    Mrs. Ania has run a small bakery in the estate center for ten years. “I know all the neighbors by name,” she says, packing fresh croissants. “There’s no anonymity here like in the center. People know each other, children play together in courtyards, elderly sit on benches.”

    It’s true. Prokocim is a big village in the city. Between blocks are playgrounds, sports fields, small shops run by residents. Everything is here: schools, clinics, pharmacies, shopping center. Twenty minutes by tram to the center, but why go when life happens right here?

    Tomek and Kasia bought their first apartment in Prokocim two years ago. “For forty meters we pay fifteen hundred rent,” they calculate. “In the center for that money we’d have a room in a tenement. Here we have our own apartment, balcony, parking, and kids have where to play.”

    Housing prices are six to ten thousand zloty per square meter – cheapest in all Krakow, but with growth potential when construction of new tram lines is finished.
