“Never again” – these were Mrs. Agnieszka’s first words after moving with 3-year-old and 6-month-old baby. But after month in new apartment in Ruczaj admits: “It was worth it. Only next time I’ll do it differently”.
In our agency we often hear: “We’ll wait with moving until children grow up”. We understand. But sometimes life doesn’t wait. End of rental agreement, job in different district, growing family in too small apartment.
The Młynarskis were moving from studio in Grzegórzki to 70m² in Prądnik. With one-year-old Hania. Their strategy? Military operation.
Week 1: Hania went to grandma. Packing things child doesn’t need daily. 70% of apartment packed before little one realized something’s happening.
Week 2: Gradual familiarization. Daily trips to new apartment “for excursion”. Showed Hania her future room. Played there. Built positive associations.
Moving day: Dad with Hania at zoo, mom with crew in apartment. Evening Hania returned to partially furnished new home. Her room 100% ready.
Key: familiar objects immediately in place. Favorite teddy, night lamp, same blanket. In sea of changes – islands of stability.
Kowalski family with two children (4 and 6 years) chose different tactic. Involved children in process. Boxes painted as “spaceships carrying treasures”. Each child responsible for their toys. Chaos? Yes. But children felt control.
Biggest challenge? Sleep. New place, new sounds. The Zielińskis slept whole family in one room for week. “Camping in new home” – that’s what they called it. Children delighted.
Pro tip from mother of three: “Unpack kitchen first. Hungry child is unhappy child. Pizza third day in row isn’t end of world”.
Our advice? Prepare “first day box”. Diapers, wet wipes, favorite food, medicines, toys. What you’ll 100% need when rest is in boxes.
And remember – children are more flexible than you think. It’s us adults who make drama from moving. For them it’s adventure. If you’re calm, they will be too.
